Old Trees

Old trees know
Indian summer is
too soon to put on
the color of new leaves

But new trees
confuse this
second summer
with the true

And get caught
when suddenly
a jet stream
change

Brings the wind
and rain
after the even
fall day

But old trees
already know
and are ready.

I've held steady
but I know
my Indian summer
will soon

Give way
to rain and cold
and I wonder
if I'll know

to be ready.
