An inch of ground

If I give in
they'll take
every inch
of ground

From the deep bog
to the tall white pine
They'll take their time
but they'll keep comin'

I've known they
want to change
everything,
everywhere

And I dare
to stand my ground
until they grind
me down

And take my
shavings
to Atlanta
for some prettified
garden cover

But I'll hover
over them
and below
for roots aren't as easy
to burn out

As are men.
