Little lives

By Engraver William H Powis,
 after Thomas Landseer (British Museum)
I've had recurring
dreams of smooth
sheets closely fitted

Tucked in
and binding
on the feet.

I've had compelling
dreams of
surface cotton

with morning
dreams of
starchy smells.

Late nights
I've comforted
myself

With recurring
dreams of waking
and dressing.

Surprised at
myself for
living while sleeping.

I've had stark
dreams that
never repeated

Just left
a tell-tale
ripple fading.

And many more
dreams of
my little lives

Have left only
hidden latches
unrevealing.
